Mmmmm...Glacier!

Mmmmm...Glacier!

Here's Kyle licking the glacier. Supposedly, glacial water is supposed to be among the purest, and it doesn't look like this one disappointed!

Into the Mist

Into the Mist

Because it was a rainy day, the line of sight wasn't very good. This is Fox Glacier disappearing up into the mist and clouds. It continues up into the mountains for about another 7 miles!

Yum!

Yum!

Here's Andrew sucking on a glacial ice cube. Even though there was dirt and sediment visible in a lot of the ice, apparently some of it looked good enough to eat!

Don't Slip!

Don't Slip!

This shot is taken looking directly downward into a hole in the glacier. The water pouring into it is runoff from the rain combined with melt water.

Climbing Gear

Climbing Gear

This is a good shot of the climbing gear required to hike across the glacier. The closest person has a walking stick with a spiked tip to support himself as he climbs, the student in the red jacket has crampons strapped to his boots to avoid slipping on the ice, and the woman in front of him, our guide, has a pick axe to carve new steps into the glacier.

Near the Snout of Fox Glacier

Near the Snout of Fox Glacier

This is just a really cool shot of the ice formations near the snout of Fox Glacier.

Fox Glacier: Size Perspective

Fox Glacier: Size Perspective

This is a shot of Fox Glacier from the surrounding rain forest. Upon closer inspection, you can see a tiny column of black dots going up the glacier a little to the left of center. They're not ice worms; they're not snow fleas; they're people!
