Add Photos using Acidfree

To post photos to Soapbox, select "acidfree media" from the Get creative menu.

Notice the three tabs:

  • Acidfree album: A collection of photographs or digital images.
  • Acidfree photo: An individual photograph or image.
  • Mass Import: A tool for importing a zipped collection of photos, automatically creating an album in the process.

As a member of the Soapbox community, you may create a new album or add a photo to an existing album. While it is possible, please refrain from posting photos to the <Root> album. However, albums can and will most likely be most appropriately added to the root.

Note: any user may post photos into any public album. If you need photos to be private, first create a group and then create the album and select the appropriate audience.

Create a new acidfree album

  1. Give the album a title.
  2. Select the Parent album. Creating an acidfree album with <Root> selected will post the new album loose in the main directory. To create a subdirectory as part of an existing album, select the album name from the dropdown.
  3. You may add a description for the album though it is not required.
  4. Weight allows you to make your content rise or fall in the order it appears on the page.
  5. Assign the album a topic or leave none selected.
  6. If the album should only be visible to a particular group, select the group in your audience list.
  7. Click Submit to create the new album.

Add photos to an album

  1. Select the Acidfree photo tab.
  2. Give the photo a title.
  3. Use the Choose File button to locate a photo to upload.
  4. Using the Parent albums list, select an appropriate album in which to place the photo. Please do not post photos to root.
  5. You may add a description to the photo.
  6. Weight allows you to make your content rise or fall in the order it appears on the page.
  7. Assign the photo a topic or leave none selected.
  8. If the photo should only be visible to a particular group, select the group in your audience list.
  9. Click Submit to add the photo to the album.

Mass Import Photos

Creating the zipped photo archive

In order to use the mass import tool, you must first create a "zipped" folder that contains all the photos you want to upload. Mac OS X and Windows XP make it easy to create zipped folders:

Under Windows XP:

  1. Create a folder on your computer
  2. Copy the photos you want to upload to that folder
  3. Right-click on the folder. A menu appears. Choose "Send To" and then pick "Compressed (zipped) Folder".
  4. A zipped file is created in the same location as your original folder.

Under Mac OS X:

  1. Create a folder on your computer
  2. Copy the photos you want to upload to that folder
  3. Right-click (or Cmd-Click) on the folder. A menu appears. Choose "Create Archive"
  4. A zipped file is created in the same location as your original folder.

Importing the Zipped Archive

Note: Importing a zipped archive creates a new photo album with the same name as the zipped file.

  1. Select the Mass Import tab.
  2. Choose the album you want the imported album to appear under from the "Parent Album" dropdown list
  3. Assign the imported album to a topic
  4. Uncheck the "public" box if you don't want to share your imported album with the Soapbox community.
  5. If you belong to a group, check the boxes for the groups you want your imported album to be associated with.
  6. In the "Files to upload" section, click on the "Choose file" button. A file-browisng window appears. Navigate your way to the zipped file you created earlier and click the "Choose" button.
  7. Your photos will be imported into Soapbox. To view them, click on the "Photos" navigation link and find the parent album of the one you imported and double click on it. Your new album -- with its accompanying photos -- will appear inside it.
  8. You can now edit the album and photos like you normally would

Note for Mac users: Macs create some hidden files that become visible when Soapbox opens up the archive. This creates an empty album called "__mac os". You can (and should) delete this album after uploading your files.
